As we age, our spinal discs naturally start to break down and we lose our sense of balance and perception along with decreased bone and muscle mass. While discomfort and pain are common, they do not need to be a part of your day to day life. Whether your goal is to increase strength, improve sleep, minimize chronic pain or medication use, a consistent Pilates program is essential.

Improve walking posture, balance and strength. Pilates is gentle, with no stress on the joints. The focus is on moving functionally and free of pain so you can stay healthy, walking and moving well. We have the pleasure of teaching clients in their 80’s and 90’s and have seen incredible changes in how they move day to day as well as their well-being. Standing tall, walking again with increased ankle joint flexibility, sleeping better and feeling revived and confident with a new way of life.

WHAT HAPPENS TO THE SPINE AS WE AGE?

As we age, the spine’s 24 discs and the muscles supporting it become weaker and are under more pressure making the vertebrae more prone to fractures. Over time these fractures, and often osteoporosis cause the thoracic spine to form a rounded C-shape or “hunchback”. The spine becomes overstretched and the chest tight along with decreased lung function. With this come pain and discomfort and often decreased mobility. Not only is the spine affected but as we age our every day movement patterns such as balance and fine motor skills naturally start to tumble. Pilates is effective in counteracting these along with increasing rib flexibility, proper breathing and organ function.

Keep your balance and vitality as you age and reach out to setup the Pilates you need!

CLIENT TESTIMONIAL ♡

David Road, General Practitioner, age 93

This young lady is a very competent Instructor and a very pleasant person with whom to work with. For 50 years of my life I worked in Family Medicine and with many therapists. Brita is one of the best and I have been fortunate enough to receive treatment from her. She started quite simply to gauge need and gradually developed a program which was continued thereafter; she is very easy to work with and expresses her satisfaction with good execution in the best way to achieve results.
She looks beyond the joint muscle problems and considers whole body difficulties. The result, I am now no longer dependent on a walker or a cane and can safely walk around with good posture. She is very patient with the elderly, I am 93 years of age and so am in good position to judge.
